Although it is a problem for teenagers and young adults, some of the most difficult cases have a real basis in childhood. One in five adolescents has at least one type of eating disorder, and the number of adults is much higher. It is important to understand what is wrong with this growing population, and find ways to help them recover.Eating disorders may be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, the body's response to a stressful situation, or it may be a sign of an underlying health problem. While many eating disorders are obviously different from each other, a large number can be treated with medication. Of course, some will need help with their addiction, but many will have a personal reaction to trauma. Treatment options should include an individualized plan, so that the treatment becomes a lifetime change. Many studies have been done on these disorders, and one common theme has been that they are curable if carefully managed.Whatever the cause of the eating disorder, the best thing a victim can do is help others understand and recognize it as well. If you feel you might be suffering from an eating disorder, get some help right away. Remember that it is not unusual for people to do or say things to please others, and there is a lot of support available if you are ready to seek it out.
