My understanding of the social work profession is to help communities, youth, families, groups and individuals who face inequality and hardships so that they can see the positive possibilities life has to offer. I faced similar hardships growing up therefore, I strive to empower people who need to have their voice heard and bring social justice to America. My dream is to make a difference by helping create a society that provides robust opportunities to anyone that may be disadvantaged. I would like to obtain my Masters of Social Work by influencing others and helping them to succeed in life. Shortly after, my father along with three of my siblings were deported back to Mexico. I faced many hardships soon after including, watching one of my sisters hit a downward spiral, living alone on the streets, watching friends in the same predicament struggle to survive. My personal background has helped motivate me by showing my own ability to be resilient and grow from change. Therefore, I hope to have others avoid the circumstances I endured. While homeless, I had a friend that made a positive impact in my life. He was the oldest sibling of three and relied on an unstable parent with drug addiction issues. My friend was unable to attend school because his siblings were not old enough to take care of themselves. His only foreseeable option was to earn money illegally. This lifestyle caused him to be a repeat offender the juvenile system. Ultimately, his mother passed from an overdose and his siblings were sent to foster care. Unfortunately, he was killed at the early age of sixteen, not even being able to experience a full life. I am confident that if he knew there were resources available, in order to help himself and his family, he would have made the changes that would have saved his life. The Voices Against Wars of Many The voicing of opinions against war was not made common until around the eighteen-hundreds. War was always considered an opportunity for glory and a chance to prove one’s self to his or her fellow soldier and his or her country. However, with the advancement in technological warfare and physical battle becoming more gruesome, many felt the need to speak out against the activity of war. Thomas Hardy voices his opinion on the second Boer War through poetry. The second Boer War witnessed some of the beginnings of more accurate cannons and propelled explosives, giving South Africa a strong resistance to Great Britain. As this condition becomes a growing problem in Canada people are forced to deal with the issues. Who are the homeless? They range from children to adults and even in some cases, families. Why are they homeless? Poverty, lack of jobs or well paying jobs, decline in Social Services, domestic violence, mental illness, and chemical dependency contribute to the majority of the homeless within our society. What effects does being homeless have on members of the family? It contributes to many physical and mental health problems for both parents and their children. Homelessness is a world-wide issue, yet zeroing in on Canada, the majority of the homeless live on the streets of Toronto and Vancouver where they seek shelter anywhere from a park bench to dark alleys. The fact remains that homelessness will always be a problem yet over the years, the number of homeless people has been on the rise and something must be done. Homelessness, specially in families, is a devastating experience. It disturbs nearly all aspects of family life, damaging the physical and emotional health of family members. In addition, it interferes with childrens education and development and often results in the separation of family members. It is hard to say exactly who the homeless are because it is usually a temporary circumstance and not a permanent condition. -2-Therefore more appropriate manner of estimating homelessness is to look at the number of people who are currently experiencing homelessness rather than the number of homeless people.WHO ARE THE HOMELESSHomeless people range anywhere from 11 to 65 years of age. Most studies show that homeless adults are most likely to be male that female. The homeless population is made up many different ethnic backgrounds, the majority being African-American. The majority of homeless children and females are victims of domestic violence (NCH, 1998). It is estimated t hat there are 200 000 homeless people who live on the streets of Canada (Globe and Mail, 1998) and an 80 000 more in risk of becoming homeless (National Post, 1998). Of these people between 30% and 35% are people with severe mental illnesses (National Post, 1998). On any given night, 45% of the 4 200 people filling Torontos homeless shelters are families with children (Toronto Star, 1998). An increasing number of the homeless are teenagers of which many are runaways who have been kicked out or felt they had no choice but to leave (Michaud, Margaret, 1988). It is difficult to find out exactly what age categories the homeless fit into because the information is very limited.-3-WHY THEY ARE HOMELESSThere is so many different causes of homelessness the largest being poverty (NCH, 1998). Poor people are frequently unable to pay for housing, food, health care and child care. It is hard to make choices when recourses are so limited. Unemployment is also a large contribution to the homeless society (NCH, 1998). Another factor contributing to homelessness is the decline in Social Services. Within the last few years, government has made it increasingly difficult for anyone to be approved to get assistance. There is also the factors of domestic violence which forces many out of their home, mental illness which enables the individuals to obtain access to supportive housing and/or other treatment services, and chemical dependency which forces people into poverty because of their addiction (NCH, 1998). It is hard to give specific percentage data supporting cases of unemployment, domestic abuse, chemical dependants, and decreasing Social Services because the data is rather difficult to find. Organizational Structure Organizational Structure In 1997 McKesson Corporation sold PCS INC. to Eli Lilly Company. It was a time when all employees were unsure of what was in store. Were there going to be layoffs, major changes or status quo? As it turned out, there were few changes that impacted the day to day life of the employees. In 1998 PCS was once again sold to Rite Aid Corporation. We are about to embark on this activity again as Advance Paradigm has purchased us from Rite Aid Corporation. Once the sale is complete, we will become Advanced PCS. PCS employees are familiar with organizational change. What type of organizational structure will work? I have been asked this many times during my tenure at PCS. I will explain whether benefits or difficulties will arise from each type. I believe there are various types in use throughout PCS today. The focus of my paper will be in my department, Materials Management, Corporate Mail Services. An organizational network is a system of interconnected or cooperating individuals according to Gary Dessler in Management, Leading People and Organizations in the 21st Century. PCS utilizes both formal and informal networks throughout the organization. In my department an informal network exists between the small groups. There are three managers, one assistant vice president, a vice president and several analysts and buyers. Analysts and buyers interact when keeping the data of the system in sync. We don't have any formal relationship to each other but are dependent on the expertise of each. Within the data group, there is a formal network made up of a manager and two analysts. Purchasing has a manager and several buyers. These two groups are very formal and structured. Problems are reported to the manager and passed up the line if necessary. Throughout PCS there is an electronic network. The company is spread out over four local campuses and nine regional offices. E-mail is the communication method of choice. The sales group is electronic and meets formally each quarter with the sales managers and directors. Even within my department, for documentation, e-mail is the communication method. Prior to working in Materials Management, the group I work with would be defined as team based and boundaryless. The person in charge wanted to build a self managed team that would function without boundaries. Our team, RECAP III, was made up of employees from each department in the company. Gary Dessler defines boundaryless as having fewer boundaries than traditional structural mechanisms. Standard operating procedures and process flows began to be created both for the core business and RECAP III as well. What PCS needed to do was to ?build the organization around the new software and the software around the customer? (Executive Edge, 1996, p. 2). These changes were to be made to meet the needs of the customer, based on what they told us what they wanted. I have tried to bring this strategy to Materials Management. I began creating Standard Operating Procedures. For this department having been together only one year, there was little to no documentation. I have looked for ways to make the workflow easier and communication easier. ?You must lay a proper groundwork, involving those who will be affected by the change and obtain commitment from the relevant stakeholders? (Pfeiffer & Company, 1993, p. 5). Also involved in Materials Management are employees in two mail order facilities who have been independent. The corporate group was taking back control of all data. People were being locked out of the system. Inquiry was the rule of the day. Standardization began and everyone as beginning to see this was for the best. PCS uses many different types of organizational structures yet we are lead by the traditional. The CEO passes the company plans, goals and strategy to all employees. The company also respects the voice of the employee. Every three years all employees complete an independent survey and then the results are passed back to us. I believe every company at one time or another uses all types of organizational structures. In many occupations I've had during my working life, I have been involved in each of them. My hope is to someday take the knowledge I've gained and use it wisely in an organization of
